Frequently Asked
Got questions?

Here are the ones we get asked most. If yours isn't here, WhatsApp us.

What is the TICA Skillcard and why do I need it?+
The TICA Skillcard is the official skilled worker card for thermal insulation operatives in the UK. Since 19 June 2017, all new applications and renewals for thermal insulation have moved from the standard CSCS card to the TICA Skillcard, which carries the CSCS logo and is recognised on every UK construction site.
What is the difference between Fit Protection and Fabricate Protection?+
Fit Protection is for thermal insulators who install insulation, lagging, cladding, and finishes on site. Fabricate Protection is for those who fabricate sheet metal cladding, jackets, and protection components, often in a workshop. Many insulators do both — your assessor will help you choose the right pathway during your initial assessment.
How long does it take to complete?+
Most candidates complete in 4 to 6 months on the Normal Route. The Fast Track route (+£200) can finish in 8 to 12 weeks if you have a strong portfolio of recent thermal insulation work and respond quickly to evidence requests.
Can I be assessed remotely?+
Yes. 027 Construction Training carries out the NVQ portfolio assessment remotely using video evidence, photo uploads, and professional discussions over Zoom or Teams. The TICA two-day Practical Skills Assessment itself must be completed in person in Darlington — there is no remote alternative for that part.
Can I get a temporary card while I complete the NVQ?+
Yes. Once you are registered with us, we issue you a letter that allows you to apply for the Red Temporary TICA Skillcard, valid for 12 months. This gives you site access while you work through the NVQ. The Red card is non-renewable, so you must complete the route within 12 months.
What are the entry requirements?+
No formal academic qualifications needed. You must be working in the construction industry as a thermal insulator, mechanical insulator, pipe lagger, or sheet metal protection operative, aged 19 or older, and able to access a real site environment for evidence gathering.
What is the difference between this NVQ and Insulation & Building Treatments?+
The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Thermal Insulation covers mechanical insulation work — pipe lagging, ductwork insulation, sheet metal cladding — leading to a TICA Skillcard. The Level 2 NVQ in Insulation and Building Treatments covers cavity wall, loft, external wall, and underfloor insulation, leading to a standard Blue CSCS card. Pick the one that matches your day-to-day role.
